  2. While admittedly this 
  3. statement is open to different 
  4. interpretations, I take it to 
  5. mean that the scene had by 
  6. this time righted itself--that 
  7. is, appeared as an upright 
  8. world. But the orientation of its 
  9. image on the retina, upright 
  10. rather than inverted as it 
  11. ordinarily is, continued to 
  12. yield an impression of 
  13. egocentric inversion. It simply 
  14. did not look upright in relation 
  15. to Stratton himself. The 
  16. solution to these two facts had 
  17. to be that he himself somehow 
  18. must be viewing an upright 
  19. world from an inverted 
  20. position. I am here suggesting a 
  21. different explanation of 
  22. StrattonΓÇÖs peculiar experiences 
  23. from the one suggested by 
  24. Harris.

  26.     The critical test is what 
  27. happened when the tube was 
  28. removed. Had the scene viewed 
  29. through the tube come to look 
  30. upright, we should expect that 
  31. the scene viewed without the 
  32. tube should look inverted 
  33. (being an example of a negative 
  34. aftereffect), but it did not. Yet 
  35. other negative aftereffects did 
  36. occur, including StrattonΓÇÖs 
  37. impression that the scene 
  38. moved rapidly whenever he 
  39. moved his head. Thus, 
  40. adaptation to the lens-induced 
  41. "swinging of the scene" 
  42. occurred during the 
  43. experiment, as noted in 
  44. Chapter 7, but not egocentric 
  45. adaptation.
